Description
Val Verde County legend of frontier specie buried near Bakers Crossing — the second Devils River ford protected by Camp Blake on the Military Road north of Comstock.
Historical Notes
Bakers Crossing lies about twenty miles north of Comstock on the Devils River. Camp Blake, under Lieutenant Samuel H. Reynolds and Company K, 1st Infantry, guarded the first wagon-suitable crossing from April to October 1854. Garrison withdrawal folklore often places buried pay chests near frontier camps along the San Antonio–El Paso road. The crossing served Whiting-Smith, Van Horn, and California emigrant traffic before forts lined the lower route. Coordinates approximate Bakers Crossing on the Devils River in Val Verde County.
