Bacon's Vault Legend — Bruton Parish

Lost Treasure VA • Williamsburg / James City County
Description
Williamsburg legend of a secret vault beneath Bruton Parish Churchyard holding Sir Francis Bacon's writings — treasure hunters sought philosophic gold in 1938 and 1990s excavations.
Historical Notes
Virginia Places recounts belief that discovering Bacon's manuscripts in a Bruton Parish crypt would usher a new world order. Unauthorized digs occurred in 1938, 1991, and a permitted 1992 search. Colonial Williamsburg's 1992 excavation found 18th-century graves but no vault of Bacon wisdom or bullion. The story persists in esoteric treasure-hunting circles. Bruton Parish remains an active church and tourist landmark on Duke of Gloucester Street.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
