Historical Notes
Backbone Valley was among the earliest Burnet County settlements alongside Smithwick, Oatmeal, and the Hamilton county seat. The first land deed specifically for church purposes in the county was executed in Backbone Valley in 1859. Most early churches doubled as schoolhouses until district systems expanded in the 1890s.
