Backbone Valley Blanco County Pioneer Strongbox — Blanco County

Lost Treasure TX • Blanco County County
Description
Northern Blanco County legend of a pioneer strongbox in the ridge-and-valley uplands near Round Mountain — where Joseph Bird founded Birdtown in 1854 before Johnson City existed.
Historical Notes
Joseph Bird established Birdtown, now Round Mountain, in 1854 in northern Blanco County. The northern and central parts of the county drain into the Colorado River through Miller Creek, Cypress Creek, and the Pedernales River. Early Blanco County was carved from parts of Comal, Hays, Burnet, and Gillespie counties in 1858; northern upland settlers clustered along wooded divides that local land descriptions sometimes called backbone country. Related entry: "Round Mountain Birdtown Pioneer Strongbox" in the Johnson City batch documents a separate Birdtown variant. Coordinates mark Round Mountain in northern Blanco County on the Austin–Fredericksburg corridor north of Johnson City.
