Assateague Island Pirate Chests

Lost Treasure VA • Accomack County County
Description
Assateague Island legend of ten iron-bound chests with £200,000 in silver, gold, and jewels buried between three cedar trees — from a 1750 pirate letter above Chincoteague.
Historical Notes
Virginia Places cites a 1750 letter intercepted by a British warship: a North Carolina pirate directed confederates to three creeks north of the second inlet above Chincoteague, marking a bluff with three cedars. Shifting barrier-island sands have never exposed the chests, but the Washington Post and regional lore keep Assateague-Virginia-Maryland border hunts active. Assateague Island National Seashore preserves the landscape where the letter placed the hoard.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
