Description
1876 Ashtabula legend that roughly two million dollars in gold bullion from the Lake Shore railroad disaster lies in the Ashtabula River gorge — the deadliest bridge collapse of the nineteenth century.
Historical Notes
On December 29, 1876, a Lake Shore and Michigan Southern passenger train plunged through a iron bridge into the Ashtabula River, killing about ninety-eight people. Treasure lore claims express cars carried millions in gold bullion that sank into the icy gorge and was never fully recovered. The disaster site and riverbed remain a focal point for Ohio treasure hunters citing period bullion shipments.
