Archer Parr Machine County Treasury — Duval County

Lost Treasure TX • Duval County County
Description
San Diego legend of unaccounted county funds from the Archer and George B. Parr political machine — the "Duke of Duval" era when the county treasury financed patronage and controlled South Texas elections.
Historical Notes
Archer Parr turned Duval County's Mexican-American majority into a political machine by trading county jobs and cash disbursements of questionable legality for votes. His son George B. Parr, the "Duke of Duval," dominated county affairs for decades and was linked to the Box 13 election scandal that helped Lyndon B. Johnson win his 1948 Senate race. Machine-era folklore often describes emergency caches of cash skimmed from county accounts when reformers, Texas Rangers, or federal tax agents closed in. George Parr was imprisoned for tax evasion in 1936 but retained influence for years. Coordinates mark San Diego, seat of the Parr machine in Duval County.
