Anson Texas Central Cattle Loot — Jones County

Lost Treasure TX • Jones County County
Description
Anson legend of Reconstruction-era cattle-trade payrolls and trail-driver gold cached along the Texas Central corridor east of Abilene in Jones County.
Historical Notes
Anson became Jones County seat after Fort Phantom Hill lost the designation in 1881. The Texas Central Railway later connected Anson to the Abilene trade sphere. Jones County was organized in 1881 amid the last great cattle-trail era. Cattle-shipping towns on the plains attracted rustlers and highwaymen. Regional folklore describes drovers burying gold and silver when threatened crossing the Clear Fork and Brazos drainages between Abilene and the Panhandle. Coordinates mark downtown Anson in Jones County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
