Anne Bonny Lowcountry Pirate Legend

Lost Treasure SC • Charleston County County
Description
Charleston folklore linking lady pirate Anne Bonny — who spent her youth in Carolina — to smuggled jewels and pirate payroll hidden before she eloped with Calico Jack Rackham.
Historical Notes
Anne Bonny was born in Ireland and raised in the Carolinas after her father relocated. Charleston Southern University and Post and Courier histories describe her fierce temperament and eventual elopement with pirate John "Calico Jack" Rackham. Kiawah Island Legends notes eyewitness tradition that Bonny may have returned to Charlestown after escaping Jamaican prison in 1720. Folklore imagines she brought or buried valuables from Rackham's Caribbean raids. Her story anchors South Carolina's rare "lady pirate" chapter of the 1716–1720 Golden Age resurgence.
