Description
Alice legend of a Texas Rangers pay chest cached during the 1912–1916 border raids when Alice served as headquarters for Rangers operating against Mexican bandit incursions in South Texas.
Historical Notes
Alice became the headquarters for Texas Rangers serving in South Texas during the 1912–1916 border raids. The town was incorporated in 1904 and chosen county seat when Jim Wells County organized in 1911, making it the administrative and law-enforcement hub between Corpus Christi and Laredo. Ranger-company folklore along the border often describes buried pay chests and confiscated contraband specie when companies rotated between brush-country camps. Related entries document Villa and revolutionary caches in Webb, Starr, and Duval counties. Coordinates mark downtown Alice in Jim Wells County.
