Alice Sadell Shipwreck Landing (1847)

Lost Treasure TX • Kenedy County County
Description
1847 stranding site of John Singer's schooner Alice Sadell on Padre Island — the shipwreck that led the Singer family to settle the coast, salvage the vessel, and later amass the legendary Money Hill fortune.
Historical Notes
John Singer captained the Alice Sadell from Port Isabel into a Gulf storm in 1847; the schooner smashed onto Padre Island but the family survived and refused rescue. They built a driftwood house from wreckage, began cattle ranching, and within four years purchased Padre José Nicolás Ballí's Santa Cruz grant — renamed Las Cruces Ranch. Coordinates approximate the south-island landing area near later Las Cruces operations; exact wreck beach is unmarked by shifting shoreline.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
