Alice Oilfield Payroll Cache — Jim Wells County

Lost Treasure TX • Jim Wells County County
Description
Alice legend of unrecovered oil-field payroll cash from the 1938 Alice oilfield discovery — when the "Hub City of South Texas" became a major petroleum distribution center.
Historical Notes
Oil was discovered in Jim Wells County in 1931, but the Alice oilfield discovery in 1938 triggered a major local boom. During the 1920s Alice had adopted the slogan "Hub City of South Texas," serving as a distribution point for supplies and construction across the region. By 1938 Jim Wells County ranked among Texas's top oil producers; the county ultimately produced more than 585 million barrels. Boomtown payroll folklore — cash strongboxes before banks caught up — mirrors tales from Freer, Corpus Christi, and other South Texas oil corridors. Coordinates mark Alice in central Jim Wells County on U.S. Highway 281.
