Alder Gulch Road Agent Plunder — Virginia City

Lost Treasure MT • Madison County County
Description
Virginia City legend of Alder Gulch road agents stripping stage and freight travelers of hard-won gold during the 1863 boom — caches rumored in gulch ravines after vigilante hangings in December 1863 and January 1864.
Historical Notes
Alder Gulch produced an estimated $30 million in gold by the 1880s; its freight road to Bannack was the richest target for Plummer's Innocents. The October 1863 Peabody & Caldwell Express holdup and December Oliver Coach robbery occurred on approaches to the gulch camps. Virginia City and Nevada City preservation districts keep the road-agent treasure tradition alive in southwest Montana lore.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
