Alberto Garza Outlaw Camp Loot — Duval County

Lost Treasure TX • Duval County County
Description
San Diego-area legend of loot from Alberto Garza's 1873 outlaw camp — when Garza and some sixty followers made Duval County the center of horse-stealing and cattle-skinning raids.
Historical Notes
In 1873 the outlaw Alberto Garza and about sixty followers made Duval County the center of their horse-stealing and cattle-skinning operations. They sent orders to San Diego citizens to bring money to buy stolen hides or enough men to fight the hide-peelers. A party of Anglos chose to attack, stormed the outlaw camp, and scattered the rustlers. Frontier rustler camps commonly generated folklore of buried plunder when bands dispersed under pressure from settlers and Rangers. Coordinates mark San Diego, the Duval County seat on the Texas Mexican Railroad.
