Description
Flat Rock legend that pioneer planter Abraham Kuykendall — one of western North Carolina's wealthiest early settlers — buried gold on his property before his death in 1814.
Historical Notes
Abraham Kuykendall acquired vast tracts in the Hickory Nut and Flat Rock country in the late 1700s. Blue Ridge Now and Flat Rock historical tradition report he distrusted banks and allegedly buried specie on his plantation. Kuykendall's 1814 death without a disclosed cache launched generations of searches around Flat Rock and Hendersonville. Facts blend with folklore in mountain ghost-story collections. The legend parallels other Blue Ridge planter caches from the Federalist era.
