A Dreamer's Unlucky Fate — Foster County

Lost Treasure ND • Foster County County
Description
Carrington plateau legend of a fused mass of $40,000 in gold buried in a buffalo wallow southwest of town — a dream-led searcher allegedly died without relocating the hoard.
Historical Notes
Jameson's "dreamer's unlucky fate" tale belongs to the buffalo-wallow gold tradition repeated across Foster, Stutsman, Kidder, and Wells counties in central North Dakota. A prospector or homesteader supposedly received repeated dreams pointing to a prairie pothole where bullion lay fused in the soil. After difficult digging and bad luck — illness, storms, or equipment failure — the dreamer died without recovering the cache. The Rocker Box Foster County page places $40,000 in fused gold southwest of Carrington, citing Buried Treasures of the Great Plains. Coordinates approximate open prairie southwest of Carrington.
