1715 Spanish Plate Fleet — Treasure Coast

Lost Treasure FL • Indian River / St. Lucie County County
Description
Treasure Coast legend of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet — eleven galleons wrecked in a hurricane off Sebastian Inlet with millions in silver and gold still unrecovered along the beaches.
Historical Notes
On July 31, 1715, a hurricane drove Spain's treasure fleet onto reefs from Cape Canaveral to Fort Pierce. More than 1,500 survivors struggled ashore while tons of bullion sank in the breakers. Salvage began immediately and continues today — Mel Fisher and 1715 Fleet societies have recovered countless coins, but legends hold major caches remain in sands off Sebastian Inlet and Wabasso Beach. The "Treasure Coast" name itself commemorates the fleet; summer storms still expose cob coins to beachcombers.
