1554 Plate Fleet Unrecovered Cargo

Lost Treasure TX • Kenedy County County
Description
Central Padre Island offshore legend of bullion, personal fortunes, and trade goods from the 1554 Spanish plate fleet never raised by sixteenth-century salvagers or modern archaeology — estimated at more than half the two-million-peso shipment.
Historical Notes
Spanish salvage expeditions in July–September 1554 recovered somewhat less than half of the cargo from the three wrecked naos; the rest sank in sand and shell along the island's outer bar. About 300 passengers and crew died in the wrecking and the fatal overland march toward Tampico; only Fray Marcos de Mena and a few others survived to tell officials in New Spain. Institute for Underwater Research magnetometer surveys in 1970 mapped sixteen possible wreck signatures near Port Mansfield for future investigation.
